Mendota Wildlife Area - Site # 309
The Mendota Wildlife Area (Mendota) is a key habitat managed by the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) in the central San Joaquin Valley. Mendota, 11,825 acres in size, demonstrates how wildlife respond to habitat management changes directed at encouraging nongame wildlife. For Mendota, these management activities included the identification and management of wetland and upland habitats critical to many species.

Background: Over 200 species of birds use the area annually. Up to 10,000 nesting white-faced ibis, as well as great-blue heron, egret and tri-colored blackbird nesting colonies. Easy access to view western and Clark's grebe courtship displays.

The Habitat: 70% moist soil wetlands

20% uplands

6% permanent water

4% summer wetlands

The Experience: More than 165 bird species and subspecies reside in the area, including shorebirds, songbirds, raptors, waterfowl and wading birds. Mendota Wildlife Area also hosts a variety of mammals, including coyotes, muskrats, beavers, minks, raccoons, weasels, black-tailed hares, cottontail rabbits, spotted and striped skunks and ground squirrels.
