Ma-le'l Dunes Cooperative Management Area - Site # 289

Background: The diverse dune habitat supports a unique faunal assemblage, including small mammals and birds, carnivores, reptiles, and amphibians. The beach is occupied by the sanderling, killdeer, whimbrel, dunlin, gulls, Caspian tern, and the western and least sandpiper. Northern harriers and blacshouldered kites can be seen occasionally over the dune areas. On rare occasions, one may be able to view the western snowy plover.

The Habitat: The area is made up of a diverse dune habitat supporting a unique faunal assemblage, including small mammals and birds, carnivores, reptiles, and amphibians.

The Experience: It is extremely rare that so many habitat types can be observed in such a small area.

Wildlife and Where to Find It: Several hiking trails with varying lengths provide easy access through the forest and dunes.

Viewing Tips: Birding occurs year-round.

Site Notes: The site is rich in plant and animal diversity, with more than seven different habitat types. These include the riparian forest, freshwater swamp, salt marsh, beach pine-sitka spruce forest, subtidal channels, intertidal mud flats, foredunes, dune hollows, and beach strand.
