| Sonoma Coast State Park/Bodega Bay - Site # 198 | |||
| Background: | Eighteen miles of coasline encompass Sonoma Coast State Park including Bodega Head, the Salmon Creek and Russian River estuaries, and more than a dozen beaches. The estuaries attracts thousands of waterfowl and shorebirds; streamside vegetation conceals common ravens, wrens, and nesting ospreys. Harbor seals haul out on the Russian River sandspit, which extends south to their rookery at Goat Rock. From Shell Beach's tidepools to Bodega Head's whale-watching point, each beach attracts wildlife. Diverse habitats at Bodega Bay Harbor offer outstanding birding; a single day can produce sightings of loons, gulls, rails, and warblers; also look for pond turtles. | ||
| Viewing Tips: | Nearly 300 bird species; many residents. Excellent viewing of waterfowl, marine birds, shorebirds, songbirds, songbirds in fall and spring. Ospreys can be seen from December to September. Marine mammals are seen year-round; look for harbor seal pups from March to June. Gray whales offshore from December to April. See tidepools at low tide. PLEASE DON'T COLLECT OR DISTURB MARINE LIFE. | ||
| How to Get There: | At Bodega Bay, take the Bay Flat Road to harbor; the road dead-ends after 3 miles at Bodega Head. To see other beaches, resume travel north on Highway 1 north to Vista Point. | ||
