Henry W. Coe State Park - Site # 88

Background: This rugged wilderness park's grassy woodlands and chaparral are broken by the canyons and ridges of the Diablo mountain range. Abundant grasslands attract black-tailed deer, western meadowlarks, and golden eagles. Brushy slopes are favored by California quail, mourning doves, western scrub-jays, brush rabbits, even mountain lions. China Hole, a pool in Coyote Creek, shelters western pond turtles, rough-skinned newts, and towhees. Acorn woodpeckers, feral pigs, and wild turkeys inhabit the oaks while Nuttall's woodpeckers, and red-tailed hawks make ridge-top ponderosa pines their home. Year-round, watch for western rattlesnakes and gopher and king snakes.

Viewing Tips: Moderate probability of seeing most wildlife year-round. Songbirds are best seen in spring. 200 wildflower species. Visitor center. Wilderness park accessed by horse and foot trails only. DUNNE ROAD IS WINDING AND STEEP, ALLOW HALF-HOUR FOR DRIVE. RUGGED HIKING TRAILS, CARRY DRINKING WATER.

How to Get There: At Morgan Hill on Highway 101, take East Dunne Avenue exit east 13 miles to park.
