Cuyamaca Rancho State Park - Site # 64

Background: Many habitats here are designated wilderness areas, and home to mule deer, raccoons, squirrels, and coyotes. Cuyamaca Lake draws cormorants, canvasbacks and brown pelicans. Abundant birds of prey include red shouldered hawks, golden eagles in the summer, and wintering bald eagles. Some of the state's largest canyon live oaks shelter acorn and white-headed woodpeckers, four types of pines are populated by Steller's jays, white-breasted nuthatches, and many migratory songbirds. Nights here belong to bats, badgers, bobcats, and mountain lions.

Viewing Tips: More than 300 bird species. Birds of prey, songbirds, and mammals can be seen year-round. Songbirds are abundant in spring. Look for waterfowl in fall. For patient observers, lots of mammals. Visitor Center. Equestrian trails. USE CAUTION ON WINDING ROAD.

How to Get There: From San Diego, take Highway 8 east 40 miles to Highway 79/Japatul Road exit and turn north. Follow Highway 79 for 4 miles to entrance.
