Carmel River State Beach - Site # 46

Background: The Carmel River flows into the Carmel River Bird Sanctuary's brackish lagoon, cuts through a wide sandy beach, and empties into coastal waters that are part of an underwater ecological reserve and sea otter refuge. Lush grasses and vegetation border the river mounth lagoon, which draws migratory gulls, waterfowl and shorebirds. Resident great egrets, great blude herons, and black-crowned night herons fish in the shallows. Spring-arriving songbirds inhabit the riparian border. The underwater reserve, extending from Pescadero Point to Point Lobos, gives divers a view of kelp. California hydrocoral, sea anemones, and other marine life. Watch offshore for occasional harbor seals, California gray whales, and southern sea otters.

Viewing Tips: High probability of seeing waterfowl and shorebirds in fall and winter. Marine birds and wading birds are seen year-round. BEACH UNSAFE FOR SWIMMING. NO COLLECTING IN UNDERWATER RESERVE.

How to Get There: In Carmel, on Highway 1, turn west on Rio Road. Drive to Santa Lucia Street and turn left. Travel 5 blocks and turn left on Carmelo Street. Drive 0.4 mile to parking area.
