| Battle Creek Wildlife Area - Site # 26 | |||
| Background: | Battle Creek's natural spawning gravels for chinook salmon and adjacent Coleman National Fish Hatchery are great places to watch fishing ospreys and bald eagles. Look for wood ducks, belted kingfishers, and many species of warblers and sparrows in vegetation bordering the creek. Raccoons and gray foxes also live in and travel along this lush riparian corridor. Resident great blue herons, great egrets, and green herons are common. Bordering meadows and oaks attract black-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and hawks. The wild life to watch would include ducks and geese, many different species of passerines, raptors, mammals like deer and coyote, and wild turkeys. During the winter, Bald Eagles are commonly seen along Battle Creek. | ||
| Viewing Tips: | Waterfowl are seen in fall and winter, ospreys and songbirds in spring and summer, and bald eagles in winter. Salmon spawn in Battle Creek during fall. | ||
| How to Get There: | From Interstate 5 southbound at Anderson, take Deschutes Road exit, drive east for 2.3 miles to Balls Ferry Road, and turn right. Drive 3 miles to Ash Creek Road and turn left. Travel 1.2 miles, then turn right on Gover Road. Drive 1.6 miles and turn left on Coleman Fish Hatchery Road. Wildlife area is before hatchery. Or from Interstate 5 northbound from Red Bluff, take Jellys Ferry Road east 14.2 miles to Coleman Fish Hatchery Road and turn right. | ||
