Salt Point State Park - Site # 181

Background: Stunning scenery and habitats range from an underwater reserve and rugged, 7-mile coastline to rolling hills and a forest of stunted cypress and pines. Sheer cliffs overlook rocky points, quiet coves, sandy beaches, and views of harbor seals, California gray whales, and brown pelicans. Breeding pelagic cormorants gather at Stump Beach. Gerstle Cove, an underwater reserve protects tidepools and other aquatic life. A grassy terrace draws northern harriers and white-tailed kites. The forested coastal ridge shelters resident black-tailed deer, bobcats, and other mammals.

Viewing Tips: High probability of seeing birds of prey in winter. Ospreys can be seen in summer months between trips to the ocean to catch fish and their returns to their snag top nests to feed their young. Watch for gray whales in winter. Resident harbor seals give birth March to May. Tidepools are good year-round during low tides. TIDEPOOLS ARE PROTECTED; DON'T DISTURB SEA LIFE AND PLEASE, NO COLLECTING.
