Palomar Mountain State Park - Site # 157
Background:	Beneath the world-famous Palomar Mountain Observatory lies a mile-high wilderness that includes the Doane Valley Natural Preserve. Meadow trails reveal mule deer, coyotes, and red-shouldered hawks. Tree squirrels, Steller's jays, western scrub-jays, and acorn woodpeckers share this steep-sided valley with migratory nuthatches, warblers, and swallows. Bats, gray foxes, bobcats, and mountain lions may appear at dusk.
Viewing Tips:	High probability of seeing songbirds in spring and summer. Birds of prey and all mammals are seen year-round. Many trails, roads, views of ocean and desert. California's southernmost population of banana slugs. Universally accessible campgrounds. COUNTY ROAD 56 IS STEEP AND WINDING. RVs AND LARGE CAMPERS SHOULD CONSULT MAP AND USE COUNTY ROAD 7.
How to Get There:	Take Interstate 15 for 14 miles north of Escondido. Take Highway 76 east 21.3 miles to County Road 56. Turn north, drive 7 miles to mountaintip intersection. Turn left, the left again onto State Park Road.
