Little Panoche Wildlife Area - Site # 123

Background: This cattail-rimmed lake attracts migratory mallards, teal, redheads, ring-necked ducks, and other waterfowl. Resident great blue herons wade along the shore. Atriplex, a low-lying shrub, provides nesting cover for tircolored blackbirds. Golden eagles and Cooper's hawks cruise over scrub-covered hills, watching for black-tailed jackrabbits, deer mice and Heerman's kanagaroo rats. Prairie falcons nest in the white-stained blufss across the lake. Greater roadrunners, western meadowlarks, and northern mockingbirds are common. Follow the shore west to a gorge that hides Little Panoche Creek; look here for chukars, California quail, loggerhead shrikes, and spring migrants.

Viewing Tips: Wading birds and some small mammals are seen year-round. Waterfowl are common in fall and winter. Look for birds of prey in winter and spring and songbirds in spring and summer. An undeveloped site managed by DFG; hike to see wildlife.

How to Get There: From 20 miles south of Los Banos, take Shields Avenue west toward Mercey Hot Springs. Drive 4.5 miles to site.
