Honey Lake Wildlife Area - Site # 91 |
Honey Lake Wildlife Area is approximately 7,600 acres of sagebrush habitat surrounding a shallow lake in the Great Basin Desert. Alkali-tolerant vegetation lines the banks. This wetland supports many migratory birds including tundra swans. There are excellent opportunities to see hundreds of migratory and nesting waterfowl, birds of prey, and passerines, sandhill cranes, beavers, pronghorn antelope, and deer. |
Background: | Alkali-tolerant vegetation fringes this sprawling, shallow lake in the Great Basin Desert. Wetlands support many migratory birds, including snowy plovers and tundra swans. Shorebirds and Canada geese nest on man-made islands. Waterfowl and sandhill cranes nest on nearby grasslands or among marsh vegetation that also hides white-faced ibises. Sage uplands offer excellent winter and spring views of pronghorn. |
The Habitat: | Water levels may vary seasonally. Severe drought and low ground water levels may make flooding wetland units difficult for waterfowl seasons. |
Viewing Tips: | More than 200 bird species. Waterfowl, wading birds, and shorebirds are best seen in spring, though viewing is good in fall. Cranes perform courtship displays in April. Look for bank swallows and songbirds from March through July. Birds of prey are residents and bald eagles winter here. Good site for seeing beavers. NO VIEWING WEDNESDAYS, SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS DURING WATERFOWL HUNTING SEASON. |
