Biscar Wildlife Area - Site # 33 |
Biscar Wildlife Area is 548 acres of sagebrush-covered uplands within Snowstorm Creek Canyon that include two small reservoirs, Lower Biscar and Upper Biscar, which supply water for wildlife such as pronghorn antelope. Along with the waterfowl and upland game species, the area supports coyotes, bobcats, badgers, and marmots. The two small reservoirs within Snowstorm Creek Canyon collect water and attract water birds. Lower Biscar reservoir is about 45 acres, Upper Biscar about 15 acres. No improvements currently exist for parking, picnicking or trails. However, space for parking is available below the dam at Lower Biscar. Access to the reservoirs is by foot along the lower side slopes of Snowstorm Creek Canyon. |

Background: | This small, high desert lake tucked in an arid rimrock canyon attracts American white pelicans, ospreys, and other water birds. Muskrats and marsh wrens inhabit wetland areas. Pronghorn and mule deer come to water near dawn and dusk during the summer. Surrounding junipers, rabbitbrush and sage conceal chukars, sage grouse, and other upland bird species. |

Viewing Tips: | Waterfowl viewing is excellent from spring through early fall; also good for ospreys. Look for upland birds in spring and summer, and wading birds in summer. On drive to and from site, scan private wetlands for cormorants and waterfowl. ROUGH DIRT ROAD; IMPASSABLE WHEN WET. CALL FOR ROAD INFORMATION. |

Site Notes: | The two reservoirs attract water birds including osprey and white pelicans. Vegetation of the surrounding area may contain upland bird species including chukar and sage grouse. During summers, mule deer and pronghorn antelope come to the lakeshore for water at about dawn and dusk. Muskrats live in wetland areas.

How to Get There: | From Susanville, take U.S. Highway 395 about 34 miles north (about 20 miles north of Litchfield). Turn west on Karlo Road. Cross railroad tracks, drive six miles to Lower Biscar Reservoir, where space for parking is available below the dam. Karlo Road is dirt, and may be impassable when wet. Call for road information.
