Moss Landing Wildlife Area - Site # 325

Background: There is a viewing platform within a quarter mile of the parking lot that looks out over Elkhorn slough. One can see Harbor seals, Sea otter and an assortment of seabirds.
Interpretive panels depict what the former salt ponds looked like and also what the Snowy Plover looks like. Some information about life in the slough.

The Habitat: Salt and brackish marsh 100%.

The Experience: Particularly for protection of Snowy plover nesting areas and as a Brown pelican roost area. The Wildlife area provides an important wintering stop over habitat for coastal migrating birds.

Viewing Tips: Fall is a popular time for viewing migrating birds and also for waterfowl hunting (hunting by boat access only and only in the tidal portion).

Site Notes: The Elkhorn slough contains a wide variety of habitats. It transcends from a Marine environment near the harbor all the way to brackish in the upper regions. The water at Moss Landing Wildlife Area is just a little less salty than the bay. The resulting habitat of pickleweed marsh in the tidal portion contrasts with the bare pond bottoms on the former salt pond section. Please be aware that protected Snowy plover nests in the pond bottoms and on levee tops February through August annually. For this reason, access on the salt pond portion is restricted to as far as the observation platform at all times (about 1/4 mile from the parking lot). No dogs are allowed.
