Tule Elk State Reserve - Site # 207

Background: This natural grassland with managed ponds and marshes is tule elk habitat as it was a century ago. Watch impressive rutting displays of antlered bulls in summer and fall, and wobbly calves in spring near the viewing areas or on guided tours. This unassuming site sustains five endangered species; the San Joaquin kit fox, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, Tipton kangaroo rat, blunt-nosed leopard lizard; and the threatened plant, Hoover's woolystar. Nineteen other species are candidates for federal listing, including western pond turtles, tricolored blackbirds,swainson's hawk and northern harriers. Songbirds and birds of prey can be seen from the viewing area.
Outdoor interpretive displays. Visitor Center, open on request if staff is available.

The Experience: Last nautral location of Tule Elk prior to near extention in 1875.

Wildlife and Where to Find It: Overlook in picnic area. ADA access

Viewing Tips: Tule elk and birds of prey are seen year-round. Songbirds are best viewed in spring. Some protected species may be seen on guided tours. Viewing area is handicap accessible. Visitor Center.

How to Get There: Near Bakersfield. From Interstate 5, take Stockdale Highway west 1.5 miles to Morris Road and turn left. Drive 1.25 miles to Station Road and turn right. Continue 0.25 mile to entrance.
