Background: | It is one of the very few areas to view native salmon runs in California. |

The Habitat: | Goodwin Canyon above Knights Ferry consists of 4 miles of cliffs with vegetation characteristic of the foothill woodlands. Below Knights Ferry the terrain flattens out to low rolling hills with riparian vegetation along the river. |

Wildlife and Where to Find It: | Car, raft, kayak, canoe, hiking. |

Viewing Tips: | More than 225 bird species in the area. High probability of seeing songbirds and waterfowl in spring. Wading birds, birds of prey, river otters, and beaver can be seen year-round. Visitor center at Knight Ferry has access maps. Campgrounds reached by boat only. PLEASE DO NOT TRESPASS ON ADJACENT PRIVATE LANDS. |

Site Notes: | The site consists of 16 access points along 59 miles of the Stanislaus River between Goodwin Dam and the San Joaquin River offering many recreational opportunities. Above Knights Ferry are whitewater rapids for experienced boaters, while the section of river below Knights Ferry slowly meanders and provides the perfect setting for a casual float trip. Seasonal attractions include wildflowers in the spring, a salmon run in the fall, and migratory birding in the winter. Observable species include river otters, beavers, deer, hawks, songbirds and waterfowl. |

How to Get There: | From Modesto, CA: From CA-Hwy 99 take CA-Hwy 108 east to Oakdale, CA. Take CA-Hwy 120/108 east out of Oakdale for 12 miles, Turn north (left) on Sonora Road, Turn east (right) onto Covered Bridge Road then immediately turn south (right) into the Knights Ferry Recreation Area entrance. |
