Andrew Molera State Park - Site # 19

Background: The Big Sur River descends through redwoods, pines, oaks, and madrones, then meanders by grasslands and meadows before entering the Pacific Ocean at Molera Point. The Headlands Trail overlooks offshore rocks populated by western gulls, Brandt's cormorants, harbor seals, and sea lions. Sea otters float amoung rafts of kelp and California gray whales pass by offhsore. Black turnstones feed on a 2-mile beach below marine terraces and meadows that attract black-tailed deer and a dozen species of birds of prey. Streamside trails offer glimpses of bobcats, raccoons, gray foxes, western screech owls, American dippers, belted kingfishers, and great blue herons. Seven species of snake inhabit the park, ranging from aquatic garter snakes to western rattlesnakes. Hummingbirds, swallows, warblers, and vireos appear seasonally.

Viewing Tips: Nearly 200 bird species. Marine birds and birds of prey are seen year-round, highest viewing probability in winter. Also look for shorebirds and waterfowl in winter, songbirds in spring and summer. Marine mammals are seen year-round. Watch for gray whales from end of Headlands Trail, late December through February. Primitive walk-in campground. Equestrian trails.

How to Get There: From Carmel on Highway 1, travel 21 miles south to entrance.
