Piru Creek - Site # 165

Background: Pyramid Lake empties into pristine Piru Creek, which flows 18 miles before funneling into Piru Lake. Float downstream into a tranquil riparian canyon fringed by chaparral, cottonwoods, and rugged rock formations scored by ribbons of quartz. Watch for black bears, raccoons, and bobcats near the banks, occaional ospreys, belted kingfishers, and cormorants fish here for rainbow trout. Red-tailed hawks and golden eagles hunt from the streamside canopy, which shelters bats and songbirds. Stop at Pyramid Lake to spot herons, egrets, western pond turtles, mallards, and other waterfowl. Watch near the lakes for reintroduced California condors.

Viewing Tips: Predators, small mammals, and birds of prey are seen year-round. High probability of seeing waterfowl in winter, wading birds and songbirds in spring and summer. Two waterfalls on creek must be portaged. Trail borders creek for 3 miles.

How to Get There: North of Castaic on Interstate 5, take Templin Highway exit and turn left. At Old Highway 99, turn right and drive 5 miles to Frenchman's Flat.
