Jarvi Memorial Vista - Site # 96
This rocky, wooded area covered with chaparral, oaks, and conifers adjoins the San Gabriel Wilderness and offers sweeping views of San Gabriel Canyon and Twin Peaks.

Background: Early in the morning, watch for Nelson's bighorn sheep on the rocky ledges. Red-tailed hawks and common ravens often glide on the mountain's thermal updrafts.

Part of the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway, there are
several places to stop and enjoy the scenery. Vista points provide magnificent views, historic landmarks, wildlife, and the contrast between the natural environment and the Los Angeles basin below.

Before Islip Saddle, and just beyond the second of two highway tunnels, you'll come upon the Jarvi Memorial Vista, which honors Sim Jarvi, a former Angeles National Forest supervisor. This vista point also serves as the trail head for the Sierra Alta Nature Trail.

Viewing Tips: Bring binoculars. While bighorn sheep often are within 100 feet of highway pullouts, they are well camouflaged and take patience to see. Both rams and ewes have permanent horns; rams' are larger. Also watch for bighorn sheep from Highway 2, near tunnels one mile west of this site; very limited parking.

Site Notes: PLEASE, DON'T DISTURB BIGHORNS.
